Men’s Pelvic Health…appointments now available!

That’s right guys, you have a pelvic floor just like women and it can have it’s fair share of problems. BUT…physiotherapy can really help with a lot of these issues. The hardest step is making an appointment - its pretty daunting the thought of talking to someone about leaking, constipation, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction - but once you are in the doors you will realise you made the right decision to seek help for whatever is bothering you.

As a profession, we are just getting started into the research journey of Men’s Pelvic Health and there is an ever expanding list of conditions we can help with. There will be more information on a variety of conditions Lesley can treat over the coming months but here is a very very brief summary of just a few of them!

  • Urinary incontinence affects every man following radical prostatectomy, with up to 59% still incontinent at 1 year. 99% of men will experience erectile dysfunction while only 22% recover by 2 years.

Pelvic floor exercises started pre op (it’s never too late to start them!) can significanlty improve both incontinence and sexual dysfunction, plus a whole load of lifestyle advice!

  • Leaking urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing, impact activity, even rising from a chair can impact quality of life. Pelvic floor physio can teach you to strengthen, and sometimes even relax, your pelvic floor muscles to improve leakage.

Needing to go to the toilet a lot during the day or night, plus feeling a sudden urge to wee can be due to several factors. An assessment and treatment plan will significantly improve symptoms.

  • Pelvic pain is a very broad term describing pain anywhere in the pelvic region - with a wide range of causes. Pain can be anywhere in the pelvis - perineum, penis, scrotum, anus, buttocks, lower abdomen.

It’s always a good idea to chat to your GP to rule out any medical conditions. Lesley can do a full assessment to figure out the cause of pain and what treatment options are available.

  • Either end of this spectrum is unpleasant - poo getting stuck or leaking is embarrassing and a serious pain in the butt (pun intended!)

Sometimes simple advice like dietary changes and improving toileting habits are all that is needed, sometimes treatment is a bit more complex. Lesley can do an assessment and figure out the next steps with you.
