Women’s Health

“Women’s Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” World Health Organisation.

It is the treatment and management of conditions affecting the pelvis, pelvic organs and the pelvic floor. Some conditions are unique to women due to our biological make up and our bodies goes through many changes during our lives, for example during and after pregnancy and menopause. The pelvis is an amazing structure connecting and transferring the weight of the upper body and spine to the lower limbs. It provides attachment for muscles, fascia and ligaments, contains and protects the pelvic organs. The pelvic floor is made up of muscle and fascia, that co-ordinates with breathing and makes up the floor of your “core”. In very simple terms, if this co-ordination is not working efficiently and there is damage/laxity to the tissues or weakness within the muscles, dysfunction can occur.

There is a growing body of evidence that physiotherapy can alleviate and help manage these conditions. Treatment is so much more than just ‘squeezing your core, holding in wee’s or sucking your tummy in’; most women may know how to use their pelvic floor but do not activate it correctly and this will contribute to their symptoms worsening.

Below are some of the conditions Women’s Health physiotherapy can help with. You can find a brief descriptions along with typical signs and symptoms by clicking on the condition of interest. There is also a video to give you even more info on the conditions. If they sound familiar, get in touch for an appointment today.
